Advice for the Entrepreneur: Lee’s Tip #211

We’re almost finished with our remodeling. The contractor keeps his tools and stuff in our eBay sales room, so we haven’t been listing. But I sold 2 items over the weekend; now I need to list a couple more. Here are 3 quick ways to get your business butt in gear after a lull.

  1. First, refresh your work area, whether you actually move your desk, or just clean it up and put a vase of flowers on it.
  2. Next, it’s OK to start slowly, but have a plan. Write your goal — and note your progress towards it — on a whiteboard mounted someplace where you can’t help but see it. For example: 3 listings per day for your first week back. Then challenge yourself later to up the count.
  3. Finally, do one thing every day to grow your business, whether it’s as simple as listing just one more item or a major project like implementing a new inventory control system.

In a slump, business owners are either wallowers, speed bumps or racecars. The wallower sinks into the abyss and spends time to “woe is me”, sometimes alone, or with a campaign on social media, along with an earful or two for their friends. The speed bump goes into a business coma, choosing to spend time “re-grouping”. They might watch TV, dabble In their hobbies, or nap till Tuesday.

Although some racecars might make a momentary pit stop at “woe is me”, and/or at speed bump in a bubblebath for 30 minutes, they get right back on the road, ramping up their systems and finding the zone when last they profited. I’m not judging — I’ve wallowed, and I’ve speed bumped, but just as a momentary one- or two-hour deal, because wallowing and speed bumping take you nowhere. Get your racecar self on!
